Expressvu Receivers with External Hard Drives

by Barry Wheeler on May 30, 2009

After writing an article Upgrade Your Receiver with and External Hard Drive I have received many comments and emails about which type of hard drives will work with the Expressvu receivers.

For those people who have external hard drives hooked to their Bell Expressvu receivers, drop me a note and tell me which hard drive you are using.  I would like to start a list so that we may all benefit from this.

Hello,

I was wondering based on the feedback you might have received, which EHD you would recommend for the Bell 6141?

Thanks,
–Jordan

Jordan, I haven’t received any responses yet, but I have tried several myself – many were simply purchased at Wal-Mart, Staples, Best Buy and Futureshop. Plus, I’ve built several myself. Anything that has its own power source and does not have the “power off” mode during inactivity works fine. Wal-Mart offers a cheap one by Retail Plus that’s a 3.5″ drive in a generic enclosure – $69 for 500 GB, works like a charm.

I just bought a Bell HD Satellite Receiver (6131) it has the USB plug in at the back and they say this also can be made a PVR. Therefore I just wanted to know would any of the following HDD work or not,

1TB Expansion Desktop external hard drive $99.99
or
1TB XL1000 Hitachi external hard drive (Automatic Backup) $99.99

Thanks in advance
Jay

Jay, we have had people indicating that either of these will work.
