Free PR7 Links? Google Page Rank Drops PR7 Site to PR4

In an article on my Internet Marketing Strategy website, I had blogged about obtained high PR links from an authority site.  This site had previously held a powerful PR7 ranking in Google, and had many places to obtain high PR one-way links.  I discovered today that this powerful authority site had dropped from PR7 to PR4 in the latest round of updates and Google Logothat this drop in page rank was probably accounting for a drop in page rank on a few of my websites.

As part of my link building campaign, I had obtained powerful one-way links from once PR7 site.  These links contained relevant anchor text and were coming from articles with relevant content.  Not only were these links passing valued Page Rank, they were driving a steady stream of traffic to my sites.  However, today in examining what had happened, I noticed that one of my websites was showing a drop in Google page rank, while another website was showing an increase in Google page rank.  One site went from a PR1 to PR3, and another dropped from PR4 to PR3.

In checking further, I noticed that the PR6 links that I had obtained from this site had dropped to a PR3.  Obviously, this drop in these high PR links was contributing to the drop in page rank on my sites.  Was the drop in Google Page Rank impacting traffic and overall SERPs of my websites?

Being curious, I examined the overall trend of my sites.  Traffic was up approximately 10% each month, rankings in the SERPs had steadily improved, and there was no apparent impact from the drop in page rank, proving the point that many people have stated in the past about Google Page Rank having little overall impact on ranking and traffic.  Still, many people chase Page Rank instead of building quality one-way links and developing well-written, unique content.

Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s Web Spam team has stated “”I’m not sure I would say ranking is dead but it’s not as important as it used to be. The fact is the smart SEOs are not just necessarily looking at the rankings. They are looking at conversion, they are looking at their server log. It’s great if you’re ranking for a phrase but unless that leads to sales that doesn’t help you very much.
