For another freebie,
Check out FortMactux Linux distro. It has OO, Gimp, VOIP communications, and so much more. And, of course, an OS independent of your current system setup, to boot (pardon the pun).  As such, its a great rescue dvd too. 
Its a very user friendly distro 4 linux newbies and experts alike.  And last but not least, to top it all off, IT (FortMacTux) has a connection to Newfoundland and Labrador. 

Drop down a copy, burn an iso, and give it a spin, and enjoy &quot;The Best, Recyclable, Enviro-Friendly, Free Software You Never Paid For&quot;.
